Overview
PhD studentship (m/f/d): Tree Carbon Allocation to the Rhizosphere and Related Microbial Processes under Severe Drought at Technische Universität München (Technical University of Munich).
The studentship is part of the EU-funded FutureForests international doctoral network and involves an interdisciplinary PhD project with the Plant Ecophysiology group at the TUM School of Life Sciences. The position aims to understand the impact of recurrent droughts on the carbon allocation by trees to the rhizosphere and related soil microbial processes, using a long-term throughfall exclusion study in Southern Germany (KROOF).
You will use this unique experimental setup to compare drought-naïve trees with legacy trees that have previously experienced drought treatments.
The project is based within the Ecophysiology of Plants group at the Land Surface-Atmosphere Interactions professorship at TUM.
Start date: 01.10.2025.
Responsibilities
The position focuses on investigating how recurrent droughts influence carbon allocation by trees to the rhizosphere and associated microbial diversity and processes. You will work with data from the KROOF site and contribute to understanding how drought history affects soil microbial communities and ecosystem function.
Location and network
Southern Germany; integration within the FutureForests network which connects multiple facilities and partners across Europe, with a focus on interdisciplinary career skills development.
